What it is
The test that shapes your season
Open CAL is the league's opening event, and taking part is mandatory for every registered athlete. Everyone performs a single competitive routine, different for each category. The result determines the division you'll compete in all season and your starting position in the national ranking — but it awards no points.
One routine
A single competitive routine per category, published at least 30 days in advance.
One field
There are no divisions yet: at Open CAL everyone competes together, by category. Women first, then men.
No points
Open CAL awards no points. It sets your division and your starting position in the ranking.
For all levels
Not finishing the routine doesn't stop you competing. Your division is based on what you do complete.
Classification
How you're ranked
Criteria are applied in this order, until the tie is broken.
- 01Most exercises fully completed
- 02Most valid repetitions performed
- 03Shortest total execution time
- 04A draw held by the organisation at the end of the event
Athletes are then placed in descending order and split evenly across the open divisions, each of which holds an even number of athletes.
On the day
How it runs
01Arrival
You're advised to be at the competition area 30 minutes before your routine is scheduled.
02Warm-up
Every athlete warms up on their own, outside the competition area, in the designated space.
03Call-up
After the call you get 5 minutes to prepare, and a maximum 10-minute grace period to present yourself.
04Execution
Exercises are performed in the prescribed order. They need not be unbroken, but each one finishes before the next begins.
05Timecap
At the audible signal, execution stops. A repetition in progress at that moment doesn't count.
The rule that only exists at Open CAL
If you can't start or finish the repetitions of an exercise, you may end it early and move to the next one. Valid repetitions up to that transition count — the transition must be announced to the judges, and it is irreversible.
Technique
Permitted exercises
CAL routines may include the following exercises. Every repetition requires full range of motion, lockout, controlled movement and zero kipping.
- Muscle-Up
- Pull-Up or Chin-Up
- Ring Row
- Dip or Straight Bar Dip
- Push-Up or Low Bar Push-Up
- Squat or Lunge
